WALNUT, Calif. ? Sophomore Kim Brady became the second Seawolf track and field athlete in two days to earn All-America honors by leaping to a seventh-place result in the women's triple jump on the second day of competition Friday at the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
The 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference titlist in the triple jump, Brady registered the second-best leap of her career with a mark of 39-2 ?. The Odessa, Texas, product is the fourth Seawolf track athlete all-time to collect All-America recognition and second at the 2008 meet to do so, joining 2008 men's long jump national champion David Registe.
Brady, who was seeded 13th of 17 entries heading into Nationals, owns the GNAC and UAA record in the triple jump with a leap of 39-3 ? set at this year's conference championship meet.
Whitney Johnson of UC San Diego won the triple jump title with a leap of 40-9 ?.
The finals of the women's 3000 meters were also held Friday, as UAA's Elizabeth Chepkosgei (Kapsabet, Kenaya) ran to a 10th-place effort with a time of 10:07.84. The 2008 GNAC champ in the 3000, Chepkosgei ran in the prelims of the 5000 meters just two hours later, placing 18th (18:13.94).
Junior Laura Carr (South Bend, Ind.), who placed 10th in the women's 10,000 meters Thursday at Nationals, ran to a 15th-place result in the prelims of the 5000 with a time of 17:49.53. Her result matched her finish in the same event at NCAAs last season.
Chepkosgei and Carr didn't qualify for the finals of the 5000.
The competition for UAA's women at Nationals came to an end Friday, as they finished the meet with two points in the team standings. The women stand 31st overall heading into the final day of events.
The Seawolf men, who stand seventh in the overall team standings with 10 points, have a chance to gain addition team points on the final day of competition Saturday as junior David Kiplagat competes in the finals of the men's 3000-meter steeplechase.
Kiplagat's event starts at 4:15 p.m. (Alaska).
