ANCHORAGE - In addition to their unprecedented success athletically for
the 2010-11 campaign, University of Alaska Anchorage student-athletes continued
their remarkable success in the classroom as well.
UAA student-athletes combined for a 3.15 grade point average
for the 2010-11 academic year. The Seawolves, which posted a 3.12 for the fall
semester, improved that number to 3.17 for the spring term.
Three student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA for the entire academic year
and 17 earned 4.0's for the spring semester. In total, 112 of UAA's 176 student-athletes
(64 percent) achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher for the 2010-11 academic year.
Eight of school's 11 teams earned combined GPAs of 3.0 or
better for the academic year, led by the women's ski team at 3.56.
"We are thrilled. This is a tribute to our students, as well
as our coaches and staff," said Dr. Steve Cobb, UAA director of athletics. "The
primary goals for our student-athletes are to be successful students, successful
athletes and display character in doing so. This continued stellar achievement
makes all of us associated with Seawolf Athletics very proud as we inch closer
to our academic goal of a 3.2 overall GPA."
On the field of play, 10 of UAA's 11 sports earned post-season
berths this season. The Seawolves ranked No. 13 in the nation among
the 281 NCAA Division II schools at the
completion of the winter championships season in the Learfield Sports Director's
Cup standings.UAA sponsors only 11 sports - two of which, men's and women's
skiing, have a combined national meet - among the lowest totals of any Div. II
school.
