Saari keeps Turnagain Arm crown

RAINBOW, Alaska – Matias Saari claimed his third straight men's title and Jessica Vetsch was a first-time winner on the women's side in the 8-mile races of the 15th annual Turnagain Arm Trail Run on Tuesday night.

Saari completed the course from the Potter trail head to Rainbow trail head in 53 minutes, 29 seconds, topping Scott Hawker by 17 seconds. Former Alaska Anchorage All-American Brent Knight finished third.

Meanwhile, Vetsch claimed a 62-second victory over Christie Haupert in the women's 8-miler, crossing the line in 1:09:27.

In the 4-mile races, Alex Alonso was a first-time winner in the men's division, getting from the McHugh Creek trail head to Rainbow in 33:55, while Leslie Varys claimed her fourth win in five years, clocking in at 38:46.

The Turnagain Arm Trail Run is a fund-raiser for the UAA ski team, with proceeds helping to fund student-athlete scholarships.
