Defense, Davis propel #5 UAA past Cedarville

ANCHORAGE – Megan Mullings scored 18 points and fellow senior Christina Davis sparked a huge second-half surge Saturday to lead No. 5 Alaska Anchorage to a 75-45 victory over Cedarville in the second game of the Seawolf Hoops Classic at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (14-1) also got 11 points and three assists from senior guard Jenna Buchanan as they outscored the visitors from Ohio 45-19 after halftime.

The Yellow Jackets (6-4) were led by 13 points from guard Abby Wolford, but the defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference champions were outshot 48 percent to 30 percent and outrebounded 40-31.

Cedarville scored the game's first four points and led 12-11 on Wolford's three-pointer at the 4:17 mark of the first quarter before the Seawolves took control. Buchanan gave UAA a 15-12 lead with one of her three three-pointers, and the hosts went into the locker room with a 30-26 advantage.

Davis would make the difference in the second half, starting the action with a steal and a feed to Jessica Madison for a layup. The Las Vegas native then swished a pair of three-pointers during a 16-4 run, along with one of her four assists on a Mullings layup.

The Seawolves capped an impressive quarter when point guard Kiki Robertson brought the ball up with less than six seconds on the clock and found freshman Tara Thompson for a buzzer-beating trey that made it 56-33.

Davis – who came in shooting just 5 of 24 from three-point land this year – made 3 of 4 from deep and finished with nine points, earning Player of the Game honors. Mullings shot 7 of 10 from the floor and added a pair of blocks, while Thompson scored nine points in only 10 minutes of action.

“I'm proud of the way our players made the right adjustments in the second half and increased their intensity as the game wore on,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy. “Christina really gave us the energy and the lift we needed tonight. Hopefully this is a sign of more good things to come from her.”

Meanwhile, Buchanan made program history in the first half when her second three-pointer of the night gave her 1,001 career points. The senior from Galena joins teammate Jessica Madison as the 14th Seawolf to surpass that plateau, adding three assists and four rebounds Saturday.

Madison finished with six points, seven rebounds and three assists, moving into 12th place on UAA's career scoring list with 1,063 points.

The Seawolves return to action Sunday when they face UC San Diego (8-1) – ranked No. 20 in the D2SIDA national top-25 poll – at 6 p.m. in the Hoops Classic finale. Cedarville will take on Alaska Fairbanks (5-7) in Sunday's early game at 3:30 p.m.
