ANCHORAGE - Guard Kerri Rulison scored 29 points to lift Lynn University over the UAA women's basketball team 65-60 at the Sports Center tonight. Bell Jordan led the Seawolves, who suffered their first loss of the season, with 15 points.
UAA (2-1) got 11 points and six rebounds from senior forward Kellie Larrabee, but it wasn't enough to overcome the team's 34.5 percent shooting. The Fighting Knights (1-0) also got nine points and 10 rebounds from Michele Newman.
There were nine lead changes in the second half in the tightly contested game. With the score 55-55 with 1:15 left, Newman scored in the lane to give Lynn the lead for good. UAA cut it to 61-60 with 17 seconds left on Jennifer Gardeline's baseline jumper, but the Seawolves couldn't get any closer as Mandi Mitchell and Rulison closed the game out at the foul line for Lynn.
Lynn won the game in large part because of their foul shooting, hitting 12 of 16 from the line compared to UAA's 18-for-31 effort.
UAA next takes the court Tuesday, Nov. 21 in the opening round of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout against Division I Rhode Island. That game tips off at 6:00 p.m. at Sullivan Arena. It can be heard in Anchorage on AM-550 and over the Internet at this site.
