Lady Seawolves drop conference opener at HSU

ARCATA, Calif. - Despite a career-high 16 points from center Bell Jordan, the University of Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team lost its Pac West Conference opener here tonight, 62-56 to Humboldt State.

Tiffany Massey had her third double-double of the year for UAA (2-4, 0-1 PWC), but the Lumberjacks (3-2, 1-0) got 23 points and 16 rebounds from all-conference center Heather Garay to pull away late.

Massey scored 12 points and tied her career-high with 16 rebounds. She also had four steals, two assists and two blocks, but the 5-11 senior also committed eight of UAA's 18 turnovers. Jordan was the only Seawolf to shoot over 50 percent on the night, going 6-for-10 from the field. She also hit all four of her free throws and snagged a career-best eight rebounds.

But UAA could not stop Garay, who went 9-of-15 and grabbed seven offensive rebounds. Meanwhile the Seawolves hit only 29.7 percent of their field goals.

The win was the first-ever for the Lumberjacks against the Seawolves in five tries.

UAA finishes its road swing Saturday when its travels to Monmouth, Ore., to play Western Oregon. That game tips off at 3 p.m. AST.
