Massey powers UAA to 59-48 win at Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Feb. 17) - Junior forward Tiffany Massey helped the UAA women's basketball team get its four-game road trip off to a good start by leading the Seawolves to a 59-48 victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building here Thursday night. Massey had 15 points, 9 rebounds, 9 steals, 4 assists and 2 blocks for UAA (17-6, 12-4 Pac West), while Heather Laats led WOU (10-14, 5-9 Pac West) with game-highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds.


The Seawolves trailed 18-11 with 5:21 remaining in the first half, but battled back to tie it 21-21 at the break. UAA then took control in the second half, taking the lead 23-21 on Massey's jumper with 18:04 left. The Seawolves never trailed from there as senior forward Stephanie Smith scored all 14 of her points in the second stanza.


Catherine Hale contributed 14 points off the bench and Julie Chambers had 12. Junior center Kellie Torrey, playing in her home state, had 9 rebounds and 2 blocks.


The Seawolves, who are ranked ninth nationally in scoring defense, held the Wolves to 32.8 percent shooting and forced 25 turnovers. It marked the school-record 10th time this season that UAA has held an opponent under 50 points.


UAA continues its trip with a 6 p.m. AST tip-off at Humboldt (Calif.) State on Saturday, before heading north for games at Simon Fraser and Seattle University next week.
