ANCHORAGE - The University of Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team made a huge second half comeback, but it wasn't enough at 19th-ranked Central Washington defeated the Seawolves 52-51 at the Sports Center tonight.
Senior forward Tiffany Massey scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds for UAA (2-8, 0-5 Pac West), which tied a school record with its eighth straight loss. Junior center Rose Shaw had 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting for CWU (9-1, 4-1).
UAA trailed 32-16 with 2:27 to play in the first before closing to 32-20 at halftime. The Seawolves then began the second half on a 13-4 run as Megan Buchmann's layup sliced the deficit to 36-33 with 13:31 to go.
After a three-pointer by sophomore Ann Carr, UAA center Bell Jordan got the ball inside and was fouled as she scored a layup that made it 50-49. However, Jordan missed the foul shot and Shaw converted a rebound basket at the other end. Massey made a jumper in the lane and then fouled Jenny Dixon with 13 second left. Dixon missed the front end of the bonus and Jordan grabbed the rebound. But Shaw made another huge play, stealing Buchmann's interior pass to Jordan with 1.5 seconds left. She missed a free throw, but the Seawolves could not corral the ball in time to get off a shot.
Massey had seven assists and only one turnover as she shot 6-for-12 from the field. Buchmann was the only other Seawolf in double figures with 10 points.
The Seawolves complete their short homestand Saturday when they host Saint Martin's for a 7:05 p.m. tip at the Sports Center.
