FAIRBANKS (Oct. 11) - Marise Knock and Brianne Halling combined for 27 kills to help the UAA volleyball team to its fourth straight victory, 24-30, 27-30, 30-22, 30-28, 15-13 over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center tonight.
The victory marked the second time in the last three matches the Seawolves (12-7, 5-4 GNAC) have recovered from a 2-0 deficit. They pulled the first trick Oct. 6 at Central Washington. UAF (9-5, 6-3) was led by outside hitter Angel Fairbanks' 25 kills.
The match was the third straight 5-game victory in UAA's current run. It snapped a three-match losing streak to UAF and also stopped the Nanooks' current three-game win streak.
UAA got 14 kills from Halling, while Knock provided 13. Both players posted five blocks, with Knock's figure establishing a career-high.
Michelle Garvin sparkled on offense and defense, posting a team-high 273 hitting percentage (7 kills-1 error-22 attempts) and a match-best 20 digs. She also paced the Seawolves in service aces with three. Kasey Kuelper and Janelle Veith each contributed 10 digs.
The Seawolves won the match despite being outhit (.114 to .094), outdug (79-75) and outblocked (15-11).
Monday's rematch with the Nanooks is set for Monday at 7:05 p.m. at the UAA Sports Center.
There will be several promotions at the match, including the chance to win two round-trip tickets on Delta Air Lines. Youth sports teams in groups of 10 or more get into the game for just $1 per person and will have a chance to win a Subway sandwich party.
