UAA blasts Nanooks in three

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 15) - The outside hitting tandem of Carolyn DeKay and Marise Knock combined for 22 kills to power the Seawolf volleyball team to a 30-26, 30-25, 30-22 rout of Alaska Fairbanks at the Sports Center tonight.

A season-high crowd of 796 watched UAA (13-7, 6-4 GNAC) win its fifth straight overall and sweep the season series from its rival for the first time since 1997. Angel Fairbanks and Candice Smith each had 12 kills for UAF (9-6, 6-4).

Knock, a 29-year-old senior from Brazil, had 10 kills, nine digs and three of UAA's 10 aces, while DeKay, an 18-year-old freshman from Eagle River, pounded 12 kills and hit for a career-high .474 percentage. The pair just four attack errors and led a parade of four Seawolves who hit better than .400.

Junior Brianne Halling led UAA with five blocks and hit .412 (8 kills-1 error-17 attempts), while freshman Jenny Mitchell contributed a .500 percentage (4-0-8) in just two games.

UAA displayed impressive depth, using 12 players. Freshman middle blocker Katina Ozrelic saw her first extended playing time and responded with three kills and four blocks in two games.

Sophomore Kasey Kuelper led an impressive defensive effort with 11 digs as UAA held Angel Fairbanks, one of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's leading hitters, to a .093 percentage (12-8-43).

Senior setter Janelle Veith registered 41 assists, continuing on pace to break Tracy Zink's (1987-90) school record. Zink herself was on hand for Monday night's match after receiving induction into UAA's inaugural Hall of Fame class on Sunday.

The 3-0 score was the fifth time the Seawolves have swept their opponent this season.

The Seawolves return to the Sports Center floor Friday against Northwest Nazarene and Saturday against Seattle University. Both matches begin at 7:05 p.m.
