ANCHORAGE (Oct. 26) - The middle blocker tandem of Starr Burgan and Brianne Halling combined for a huge night as the UAA volleyball team crushed Humboldt State 30-22, 30-14, 30-22 at the Sports Center tonight.
UAA (16-7, 9-4) posted its eighth straight win to remain in second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while the last-place Lumberjacks (6-17, 2-11) had their two-match winning streak stopped.
Halling and outside hitter Carolyn DeKay led a balanced UAA attack with nine kills apiece, while Halling also came through defensively with nine blocks. Burgan set career highs for total blocks (10) and block assists (7), while tying her career-best with three solo blocks. The sophomore also had seven kills and seven digs.
The Seawolves committed only 11 attack errors on the night, leading to a .333 hitting percentage. HSU was held to a -.033 mark thanks largely to UAA's 19.5 to 3 advantage in blocks.
Senior outside hitter Marise Knock had a match-high 12 digs, and senior setter Janelle Veith contributed eight digs and 37 assists. Veith's first dig of the night made her the eighth Seawolf to tally 1,000 digs for her career.
The Seawolves go for their ninth straight win Saturday night when they host Western Oregon at the Sports Center beginning at 7:05.
