DeKay leads Seawolves to record-setting win

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 27) - Freshman Carolyn DeKay blasted a match-high 15 kills to lead the UAA volleyball team to its ninth straight victory, 30-20, 30-18, 30-16, over Western Oregon at the Sports Center tonight.

Junior Brianne Halling added nine kills for UAA (17-7, 10-4 GNAC), while Western Oregon (10-12, 6-8) was led by Gwen Kreitzberg's seven kills. The win was UAA's fifth consecutive 3-0 sweep and increased the Seawolves' streak to a school-record 18 straight games won.

Senior setter Janelle Veith had seven kills, 31 assists and 11 digs as UAA avenged a 3-0 loss to the Wolves, Sept. 20 in Monmouth, Ore.

Senior Marise Knock and sophomore Kirsten Hunley had 11 and 10 digs, respectively, while outside hitter Michelle Garvin came through with five kills in just 12 attacks. But it was DeKay and her powerful right arm that made the biggest difference Saturday as the Eagle River native hit a career-high .500 (15 kills-2 errors-26 attempts).

The Seawolves hit an impressive .284 (44-13-109) and held the Wolves to .041 (30-25-121), including a minus .067 mark in the first game.

UAA faces its most challenging task of the season next weekend when it visits No. 21 Western Oregon and Seattle Pacific on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3. The Vikings have clinched the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and sports a 20-match winning streak, while SPU trails UAA for second place by just one match.
