Veith's triple-double helps Seawolves down Saints

LACEY, Wash. (Oct. 5) - Senior setter Janelle Veith notched a triple-double to lead the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 30-18, 23-30, 30-28, 30-26 victory over host Saint Martin's at SMC Pavilion tonight.


The Seawolves (9-7, 2-4 GNAC) were paced by middle blocker Brianne Halling's 16 kills, while senior Tiffany Massey anchored the defense with a career-high 16 digs. Saint Martin's (5-15, 2-6) was led by Alicia Denny's match-high 17 kills.


UAA played the match without two of its best outside hitters, Marise Knock (back) and Jenny Mitchell (knee), but Massey provided a heroic effort in relief with career-highs in digs, kills (9), aces (3) and assists (3).


Meanwhile, Halling tied her career-high with nine block assists and Kasey Kuelper equaled her best-ever mark with six aces.


Veith, whose triple-double was her second of the season and third of her career, downed a career-high 13 kills to go with 40 assists and 10 digs. She also had a pair of aces and blocks.


The Seawolves took the first and third games behind strong hitting percentages of .323 and .340, and closed out the victory in the third despite hitting just .161. UAA outhit the Saints .240 to .163 for the match.


UAA travels east to face Central Washington in Ellensburg on Saturday night. That match begins at 6 p.m. ADT.
