ANCHORAGE (Nov. 13) - Tanya Nizich and Bell Jordan each scored 14 points to lead five Seawolves in double-figures as the UAA women's basketball team recorded its first win of the season, 67-54 over Christian Heritage at the Sports Center tonight.
Jordan also had a game-high 14 rebounds for UAA (1-1), while Christian Heritage (1-3) was led by 22 points from guard Shanel Zunic.
Just 24 hours after a disheartening loss to CHC in their season-opener, the Seawolves came out hot, taking a 5-0 lead on two quick Nizich jump shots. UAA would never trail, building its lead to as high as 54-29 with 10:54 remaining in the second half.
Other double-figure scorers included freshman forward Jen Stoddard with 12, senior guard Stephanie Johnson with a career-high 11 and senior guard Diana Gundersen with 10.
Freshman forward Lindsay Behrends scored only two points, but found other ways to contribute by grabbing six rebounds and blocking three shots. Meanwhile, freshman point guard Jessica Reilly managed six assists with just one turnover for the second consecutive game.
Forward Andrea Hamilton scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for CHC, a NAIA school from El Cajon, Calif.
UAA is off until Nov. 20, when it hosts Division I Gonzaga in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.
