ANCHORAGE (Nov. 9) - Senior setter Janelle Veith broke the UAA career assists record but Central Washington was too tough Friday, downing the Seawolves 30-26, 30-22, 30-23 at the Sports Center.
Nine players led UAA (17-10, 10-7 GNAC) with nine kills each, while CWU (16-9, 12-6) got 17 kills from Carolyn Mires and 15 from Gita Burke.
The Wildcats' win avenged a 3-2 setback against the Seawolves, Oct. 6 in Ellensburg, Wash., when UAA rallied from a 2-0 deficit. But there would be no UAA comeback Friday as CWU put together its best play (.245 hitting percentage) in the third game.
UAA was led in the digs department by Tiffany Massey and Kasey Kuelper with 12 apiece, while CWU's Kate Reome anchored the Wildcat defense with a match-high 17.
Veith broke Tracy Zink's 11-year-old school record of 3,791 assists when she set up Jenny Mitchell with a kill in the middle of the third game. With one match remaining in her career - Saturday, 7:05 p.m. vs. Saint Martin's - Veith now has 3,799 assists.
Saturday's match will be Senior Night, honoring Veith, Massey, Marise Knock and Bobbi Souter.
