Bullock's 36 not enough against ASU

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 29) - Sophomore forward Peter Bullock scored a career-best 36 points, but the UAA men's basketball team lost another close home game, 93-87 to visiting Angelo State at the Sports Center tonight.

UAA (1-9) also got a career-high 16-point effort from freshman Mark Drake, but ASU (9-3) completed a second-half comeback behind the sharp shooting of forward Corey Williams.

Williams shot 10 of 19, finishing with 23 points after scoring just two in the first half. Rams point guard Jermel Brooks scored 17 and had team-highs of eight rebounds and seven assists as ASU came back from a 46-35 halftime deficit.

Bullock, whose previous career-best was 25 against Indiana in November, scored on a variety of post-up moves and shot jumpers. He scored 24 of his points before the half and finished the game one rebound short of his career-high of 14. The East Anchorage High product also passed the career 500-point mark in just his 37th game.

Bullock's output was the most for a Seawolf since former All-American Jason Kaiser scored 36 at Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 18, 1995. Kaiser topped the 35-point mark three times that year.

UAA outrebounded the Rams for the second straight night, 38-37, but it wasn't enough to stop the Rams, who shot 55.6 percent (20-36) in the second half.

Drake, a guard from Shelbyville, Ind., shot 6 for 12 in the best offensive game of his young career, while fellow freshman G.J. Macon scored 10 points. Macon has now reached double-digits in three straight games.

UAA finished the non-conference season without a win for the first time in school history, but will take its 1-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference record into Thursday night's home game against Saint Martin's. UAA then plays GNAC rival Central Washington on Saturday, Jan. 5. Both games tip off at 8 p.m. as part of a women-men double-header at the Sports Center.
