Undermanned Warriors stun Seawolves

ANCHORAGE (Aug. 25) - Outside hitter Sarah Barnett had match-highs of 20 kills and 22 digs to lead visiting Cal State-Stanislaus to a 32-30, 20-30, 28-30, 30-21, 15-13 victory over the UAA volleyball team tonight.

UAA (1-1) was led by freshman Carolyn DeKay's 16 kills. Brianne Halling and Marise Knock added 13 kills apiece for the Seawolves.

The Warriors (1-1) were down to just eight healthy players after starting setter Valerie Lopez sprained her ankle in Friday's match. But they got a lift from Alaska native Tara Hillis of Palmer, who replaced Lopez and contributed 57 assists and 13 digs. Hillis, a freshman, also hit .375 (7 kills-1 error-16 attempts) on the evening.

UAA took a 2-1 advantage after three games as Stanislaus struggled to find its rhythm. But the Warriors hit .417 over the last two games to eke out the win.

The Seawolves are off until Thursday when they open play in the 8th annual UAA Invitational. St. Joseph's (Ind.) opens play at 5 p.m. against 10th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, followed by the Seawolves vs. San Francisco State.
