CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Sept. 8) - The UAA volleyball team completed a perfect weekend at the Capital City Classic with wins over Wheeling Jesuit and Ashland (Ohio) University on Saturday. The Seawolves (7-3) were the lone unbeaten squad in the seven-team Classic.
UAA began the day by beating previously undefeated Wheeling Jesuit 30-23, 28-30, 28-30, 30-25, 17-15. Freshman Carolyn DeKay led UAA with 18 kills and junior Brianne Halling had 14 against the defending West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Cardinals. WJU entered the match 10-0.
Setter Janelle Veith notched the second triple-double of her career with 10 kills, 52 assists and 12 digs. It was UAA's first triple-double since Veith did it as a freshman Oct. 3, 1998.
Playing two hours later in the 100-degree, non-air conditioned gym, the Seawolves capped their 4-0 weekend with a victory over Ashland. Halling led UAA with 15 kills, while Marise Knock had 13. Sophomore Michelle Garvin had six kills, but was more impressive on defense, getting a career-high 20 digs. Meanwhile, Veith was solid with 47 assists, 19 digs and a .444 hitting percentage (4-0-9).
Halling, a 6-1 middle blocker from Bakersfield, Calif., was named to the all-tournament team along with Veith, a senior from Spokane, Wash. Halling recorded 47 kills over the four matches, including wins over West Virginia State and host Charleston on Friday.
UAA begins the Great Northwest Athletic Conference campaign Thursday when they face Seattle University on the road.
