UAA women edged by Nanooks in OT

FAIRBANKS (Jan. 19) - Amy Woodruff banked in a three-pointer with 16 seconds left in overtime, giving host Alaska Fairbanks a 66-62 win over the UAA women's basketball team at the Patty Center tonight.

The Seawolves (4-12, 0-7 GNAC) came close to pulling the upset behind a 22-point performance from center Bell Jordan. But UAF (11-5, 5-2) center Heidi Arts was equally as impressive, scoring 24 points on 11-for-17 shooting and grabbing 12 rebounds.

UAA had a chance to tie the game after Woodruff's shot, but Lindsay Behrends was whistled for a turnover with 8 seconds left, and the Nanooks closed the deal from the free throw line. The Seawolves failed to make a field goal in the extra period, getting outscored 7-3.

The Seawolves, who have now dropped three straight to their arch rivals, led 36-29 at halftime and by as much as 52-44 with 11 minutes remaining. But the Nanooks rallied to tie it at 53 on a Woodruff three-pointer with 4:14 left.

The teams traded baskets twice before Bell Jordan gave the Seawolves a 59-57 advantage with a pair of free throws. UAF's Melanie Wagoner then connected on a jumper to make it 59-59. Both teams missed final opportunities to win the game in regulation as UAA's Tanya Nizich committed a turnover and Wagoner missed a shot at the buzzer.

Nizich was sharp from the field, nailing 5 of 7 three-pointers and finishing with 17 points and 5 rebounds. It was the first time a UAA player hit five or more threes since Tirzah Church did it in the final game of the 1999-00 season.

The Seawolves shoot again for their first conference win Jan. 24 at Seattle University. Tip of is 6 p.m. Alaska time.
