Seawolves fell 'Jacks for first GNAC win

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 31) - The senior inside-outside combination of Bell Jordan and Stephanie Johnson combined for 38 points, and guard Tanya Nizich chipped in 11 to lead the UAA women's basketball team to its first conference victory, 66-53 over Humboldt State at the Sports Center tonight.

Jordan, a 6-2 center, scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, both game-highs. UAA (5-14, 1-9 GNAC) also won because of a fine defensive effort, holding Humboldt's leading scorer, Nicole Lynch, to just 6 points. Jackie Kolesar led HSU (5-13, 3-7) with 14 points.

With the lead bouncing back and forth for the first 10 minutes, UAA could score inside with Jordan, who had her league-leading ninth double-double. But it wasn't until Johnson, whose previous career-high was 11, came off the bench that the Seawolves found their outside game.

Johnson hit her first six shots, all jumpers from at least 15 feet. With UAA down 13-11, Johnson shot the lights out on five of the next six possessions and earned the assist on UAA's other basket, a jumper by senior guard Diana Gundersen. The Seawolves took a 22-18 lead behind the seniors' hot shooting, a lead they would not relinquish.

UAA led 32-29 at halftime and the Lumberjacks could come no closer after scoring the first bucket of the second half. The final margin was UAA's biggest lead. Johnson finished with 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Humboldt State guard Peni Vaefaga kept her team close in the first half with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, but the Seawolves held her without a field goal in the second half and she finished with 12 points on 4-for-12.

The Seawolves outrebounded they Lumberjacks 42-38. UAA is now 5-3 when leading in rebounds, 0-11 when the other team gets more boards.

The 53 points allowed were the fewest UAA has allowed in 10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.

The Seawolves return to action Saturday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m., when they look to avenge an earlier loss to Western Oregon at the Sports Center.
