ANCHORAGE (Jan. 8) - University of Alaska Anchorage student-athletes achieved an overall grade point average of 3.06 for calendar year 2001. This marks the seventh time in nine years that UAA student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher.
According to Dede Allen, UAA associate athletic director for academics and compliance, 69 of UAA's 119 student-athletes (58 percent), representing nine teams, achieved a 3.0 or higher for the fall semester. Fourteen student-athletes produced a 4.0 GPA for the fall semester.
"We continue to take great pride in the academic effort and results earned by our students," said Dr. Steve Cobb, UAA director of athletics. "We never forget that graduating students that are prepared to be productive members of our society is our primary goal."
The following is a sport-by-sport list of those student-athletes that achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher for the fall semester:
Basketball, men - Garrett Abbott, Peter Bullock, Mark Drake, Jon Madison and Ty Shippen.
Basketball, women - Diana Gundersen, Stephanie Johnson, Tanya Nizich and Jessica Reilly.
Cross country running, men - Vernon Campbell, Chris Cannon, Andy Elvester (dual-ski), Sheamus Lamb, Dana Mosman (dual-ski), Nate Normandin (dual-ski), Sean Rivers, Scott Rood, Tobias Schwoerer (dual-ski), Mark Strabel (dual-ski) and Zach Violette (dual-ski).
Cross country running, women - MeYoung Blum, Leslie Boyd (dual-ski), Stacey Edwards (dual-ski), Sarah Hansen (dual-ski), Katya Lamskova, Kiersten Lippman (dual-ski) and Heather Walsh.
