UAA men blast Wolves with threes

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 10) - Junior Bryson Vaughan broke one long-standing school record and freshman Mark Drake tied another as the UAA men's basketball team cruised to an 87-68 victory over host Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building tonight.

UAA (4-9, 4-0 GNAC) got 27 points from Drake and 16 from sophomore Peter Bullock as the Seawolves jumped to a 19-0 and never let the Wolves back in the game. Guard Bruce Williams led WOU (4-9, 1-3) with 27 points.

Drake went 9 for 12 from three-point range, tying Ron Fischer's 12-year-old school record for threes in a game. He finished with 27 points in 26 minutes, many coming off feeds from point guard Vaughan, who dished a school-record 16 assists. Vaughan broke a a record that had stood since Dec. 5, 1983 when Chris Bullock had 15 against Hastings College.

But Thursday's performance by Vaughan was even more impressive because it came in a league game, helping UAA remain one of four teams unbeaten in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. However, there will be just two undefeated teams after Saturday, when UAA plays at No. 12 Humboldt State (13-0, 4-0) and Seattle Pacific and Western Washington (each 4-0 in league) play in Seattle.

Vaughan scored 12 points also, becoming the third Seawolf this year to register a double-double. Other good showings for UAA included guard Ty Shippen (13 points, 4-6 3-pt. FG) and forward G.J. Macon (team-high 9 rebounds).

Saturday's UAA-Humboldt State game tips off at 6 p.m. Alaska time.
