Seawolves rally past 'Jacks in five

ARCATA, Calif. (Oct. 17) - The UAA volleyball team captured its first road win of the season in dramatic fashion tonight, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Humboldt State 20-30, 27-30, 30-24, 30-27, 16-14 at the East Gym.


Senior middle blocker Brianne McCabe had a team-high 19 kills and a match-best eight blocks to help the Seawolves even their record at 9-9 overall and 5-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, while winning for the first time in nine matches away from the Sports Center this year.


Julia Shaw led the Lumberjacks (4-14, 2-8) with a match-best 21 kills, but the Seawolves forced HSU's top hitter into 15 attack errors and won the blocking battle 12-5 over their hosts.


In the deciding game, the Seawolves jumped to an early lead before the upstart Lumberjacks rallied to force ties at 12-12 and 14-14. The Seawolves then answered with kills from Carolyn DeKay (7 kills, career-high 8 digs) and McCabe to complete the comeback.


"The team showed unbelievable resiliency after losing those first two games," said UAA head coach Kim Lauwers. "I'm proud that they hung in there and didn't quit."


Junior middle blocker Starr Burgan played another outstanding match, with 10 kills and only one error in 22 attempts (.409). She also recorded two of her four blocks in the fifth game.


Junior outside hitter Michelle Garvin had a team-high 13 digs for UAA and set a career-high with seven block assists.


The Seawolves are now 5-0 all-time against the Lumberjacks.


UAA completes its road trip Saturday when they take on Western Oregon (3-15, 3-7) at 6 p.m. Alaska time.
