Seawolves fall short against No. 7 Vikings

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 25) - The Seawolves played some of their most inspired volleyball of the year, but couldn't hold on for the victory, losing 30-28, 28-30, 30-27, 30-26 to seventh-ranked Western Washington tonight at the Sports Center.

A crowd of 504 watched UAA (10-10, 6-6 GNAC) become only the third Great Northwest Athletic Conference team to win a game from the Vikings (17-2, 12-0) this season as sophomore Carolyn DeKay led the Seawolves with 22 kills.

WWU had four players in double-figure kills, with 2001 conference player-of-the-year Shannon Rowland and Meghan Evoy tallying 16 apiece. With the match tied 1-1 and UAA leading 25-20 in the third game, the Vikings turned the tide by winning 10 of the final 12 points. The win extended WWU's 35-match (30 in the GNAC) conference winning streak.

UAA was stellar defensively, picking up a season-best 107 digs as Michelle Garvin (25), O'Lita McWilliams (22) and Kasey Kuelper (19) all registered career-highs in the category. Junior libero Kirsten Hunley was one short of her career-best with 20 digs.

Senior Brianne McCabe had 19 kills for the Seawolves, but the home team was unable to come up with a consistent third offensive threat.

The Seawolves, who had their four-match winning streak stopped, will try to get back on track when they host Seattle Pacific (6-13, 5-7) Saturday at the Sports Center. First serve is 7:05 p.m.
