Wildcats nip Seawolves

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 4) - Brianne McCabe matched UAA's highest kills total of the season, but it wasn't enough to save the Seawolf volleyball team from its first home loss, 27-30, 30-21, 23-30, 30-19, 15-10, against Central Washington on Friday.

McCabe had 23 kills for UAA (6-9, 2-5 GNAC), which fell to 6-1 at the Sports Center this season. The Wildcats (6-7, 4-2) got 45 combined kills from the duo of Julie Roberts (24) and Carolyn Mires (21) as they hit .328 as a team.

UAA's O'Lita McWilliams had her third double-double of the season with 12 kills and a match-high 19 digs, while setter Kasey Kuelper chipped in with five kills, 12 kills and three blocks to go with her 55 assists.

The Seawolves led from start to finish in the first and third games and looked strong as they headed to the fourth. But the Wildcats, the top percentage-hitting team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, put away their attacks in the fourth, leading from start to finish. UAA took a 6-5 lead in the fifth, but the Wildcats won the next three points and never trailed again.

Carolyn DeKay (16) and Starr Burgan (13) also contributed double-digit kills as the Seawolves fell to 0-2 in five-game matches.

UAA gets a chance to bounce back Saturday when they host Saint Martin's (1-10, 1-5) at the Sports Center at 7:05 p.m.
