ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Nov. 1) - Carolyn DeKay had 21 kills and Starr Burgan added a career-high 15 kills to lead the UAA volleyball team to its fifth win in six matches, 30-25, 30-22, 28-30, 30-27, over Central Washington at Nicholson Pavilion tonight.
UAA (12-10, 8-6 GNAC) avenged an earlier loss to CWU (10-11, 7-6) by outhitting the Wildcats .272 to .248. Carolyn Mires led the hosts with 18 kills.
The Seawolves broke open a tight first game by winning seven of the final nine points after it was tied 23-23. UAA jumped to a 19-12 lead and fought off a brief Wildcat charge to cruise to the win behind DeKay's 10 kills in Game 2.
After CWU pulled out the third game, UAA jumped to an early lead in the fourth and increased the advantage to 25-19. The Wildcats pulled to within 28-27, but a service error by setter Kate Reome and a DeKay kill sealed the match for the Seawolves.
Seawolf setter Kasey Kuelper was outstanding again, hitting .545 (6 kills, 0 errors, 11 attempts) and dishing 51 assists. It was her third straight match without committing an attack error.
Fellow junior Michelle Garvin was solid as well, finishing with nine kills and 11 digs. Junior outside hitter O'Lita McWilliams led the team with 16 digs, while Burgan registered five block assists.
UAA looks for its third straight road victory when it visits Saint Martin's tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Lacey, Wash.
