ANCHORAGE (Oct. 5) - Brianne McCabe and Kasey Kuelper delivered outstanding performances and the rest of the Seawolves played precise volleyball as UAA got back on track with a record-setting 30-16, 31-29, 30-17 win over Saint Martin's at the Sports Center on Saturday.
McCabe had 20 kills and just one error in 35 attempts (.543), and Kuelper dished 54 assists, helping UAA improve to 7-9 overall, 3-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Marlo Urdahl led Saint Martin's (1-11, 1-6) with 10 kills.
After cruising through the first game, the Seawolves built a 28-24 lead in the second before the Saints rallied to tie it at 28 and 29. But UAA was up to the task as O'Lita McWilliams (10 kills, 19 digs) and Michelle Garvin (8 kills, 10 digs) converted back-to-back sets from Kuelper to claim the 2-0 lead.
The Seawolves grabbed another early lead in the third, sparked by sophomore Katina Ozrelic, who wound up with .714 hitting (5-0-7) and six digs, playing only that game.
The team's 68 kills set a school match record for most per game (22.7), breaking the old record of 22.0, set two years ago against St. Cloud State. Garvin was a major contributor in the effort, with a 8 kills and only one error in 16 attempts (.438).
Kuelper's 18.0 assists per game were just short of the individual school record of 18.75, set by Janelle Morrisette in the same St. Cloud State match.
UAA has six days to prepare for the last of a three-match homestand, Oct. 12 against Alaska Fairbanks (7:05 p.m.).
