'Pokes sneak past Seawolves

ANCHORAGE (Nov. 29) - Peter Bullock was a force inside and outside, but his Seawolves couldn't overcome the perimeter accuracy of Donta Richardson as Wyoming knocked off host Alaska Anchorage 77-69 in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout consolation semifinals today.

Richardson had 30 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and hit all eight of his free throws for Wyoming (2-1). He also nailed four of his eight three-point shots.

Meanwhile, Bullock went for 37 points for the Seawolves (1-3). The hometown junior shot 12-for-23, including 3-for-3 on threes, pulled down 13 rebounds and grabbed four steals. His point total was just three shy of his career-high and four short of the Shootout single-game record, set by Purdue's Glenn Robinson in 1993.

UAA's Shane Bannarbie, who scored a then-career-high 13 points in UAA's road loss to Wyoming last season, went for 17 on Friday, shooting 7-for-10 (3-6 3FG). The senior also had four rebounds and three assists in 31 minutes off the bench.

Besides Richardson, Wyoming's Marcus Bailey made the difference in the game, scoring 15 points, including several key baskets as the Cowboys held off a late UAA rally.

The Seawolves controlled the action for much of the first half, jumping to an early 18-8 lead on 10 straight points from Bullock. But the Cowboys grabbed their first advantage at 26-25 on a David Rottinghaus layup with 6:42 left, and took a 46-37 lead into the locker room.

UAA ran off nine straight points to forge a 52-52 tie with 12:42 remaining before Wyoming answered with a 15-4 run of its own to take command. Bullock converted a traditional three-point play to cut the margin to 71-67 with 2:35 left, but UAA would come no closer.

The Seawolves will face the loser of the Montana-Loyola Marymount game at noon Saturday for seventh place, while the Cowboys play the winner of that game at 2 p.m. for fourth place.
