Nanooks top Seawolves 3-2

FAIRBANKS (Nov. 9) - The UAA volleyball team started strong but wasn't able to overcome a determined home team and a hostile crowd, losing 28-30, 28-30, 30-22, 30-21, 15-10 to Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center tonight.

Michelle Garvin had a career-high 17 kills plus 17 blocks for UAA (13-11, 9-7 GNAC), which fell two matches behind UAF (14-7, 11-5) for third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference race with only two matches to play.

Mallory Bergstrom led the Nanooks with match-highs of 18 kills and 21 digs.

Starr Burgan had 12 kills and 11 digs for UAA, her team-leading sixth double-double of the season, and setter Kasey Kuelper topped the half-century mark for the third straight match with 52 assists.

UAF, which outblocked the Seawolves 18-5, was propelled by a crowd of 1,222, the largest to watch either team play this season.

The Seawolves close the season next weekend with matches against Seattle University (Fri., Nov. 15) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., Nov. 16). Saturday's match will be Senior Night, honoring UAA's lone senior, Brianne McCabe.
