UAA women win hard-fought GNAC opener

ANCHORAGE (Dec. 5) - Kamie Jo Massey and Mindy Mendenhall each posted double-doubles to lead the UAA women's basketball to a 70-63 comeback victory over Seattle University at the Sports Center on Thursday.

The Seawolves (3-2, 1-0 GNAC) took control of the game with a 43-31 rebounding advantage, while the Redhawks (3-2, 0-1) could not keep up their hot shooting after taking a seven-point halftime lead. It was the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Massey had 12 of her game-high 21 points in the second half, hitting all four of her field-goal attempts. The junior from Payson, Utah, also had 10 rebounds, three blocks and a pair of assists.

Mendenhall scored 13 points, with 10 rebounds and two steals. She also had a key block as the Redhawks were trying to cut the Seawolves' lead to two points with under a minute remaining.

Leah Welton led SU with 18 points on 4-of-6 three-pointers, but her Redhawks cooled from 48 percent shooting in the first half to 30 percent in the second.

Center Mary Aschoff had 13 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Tanya Nizich scored 15 points and dished three assists for UAA.

UAA trailed 32-25 at halftime, but quickly cut into the SU lead and knotted the game 41-41 on Jessica Reilly's breakaway layup with 13:09 to go. The lead changed hands twice before Massey put UAA up 56-54 on a layup with 5:17 left. Two Massey free throws and a Nizich three-pointer made it 61-54, and the Redhawks could come only as close as four points the rest of the way.

The Seawolves are off until Dec. 16, when they travel to San Diego to take on Christian Heritage. UAA's originally scheduled game with Western Washington on Saturday has been moved to Feb. 10 due to a flu epidemic among the WWU squad.
