WOU outlasts UAA, 73-56

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 2) - Center Bell Jordan delivered her 10th double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough to help the UAA women's basketball team overcome Western Oregon's depth and experience in a 73-56 loss at the Sports Center tonight.

Jordan had 20 points and 10 rebounds for UAA (5-15, 1-10 GNAC), but her effort was largely offset by that of forward Heather Laats, who had 20 points and 13 rebounds for WOU (12-8, 5-6).

The Seawolves - who were looking to avenge a 113-51 beating in the conference opener at WOU, started fast. Laura Taborsky (11 points) finished a 12-4 game-opening blitz when she stole an inbounds pass and converted a layup with 15:21 to play.

But the Wolves chipped their way back into contention behind Laats' 14 first-half points and took a 32-30 lead into the locker room.

Jordan, a senior from Stockton, Calif., scored the first bucket of the second half to knot it at 32, but WOU went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. The Seawolves cut it as close as 49-43 with 8:32 to play, and 61-54 with 4:15 showing, but they would get no closer as the Wolves hit 12 of 13 free throws in the final 4 minutes.

The Seawolves begin a 4-game road trip Thursday when they visit Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Northwest Nazarene. That game tips off at 3:30 p.m. Alaska time in Nampa, Idaho.
