Seawolves fall short against No. 6 'Jacks

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 14) - The sophomore duo of Peter Bullock and Nathon Glover combined for 41 points, but it wasn't enough to pull the upset as the UAA men's basketball team lost a second-half lead and the game, 91-88 to No. 6 Humboldt State at the Sports Center tonight.

The Seawolves (7-15, 7-6 GNAC) shot 52.6 percent from the field but were outrebounded 45-30 and hurt themselves with three costly technical fouls. The Lumberjacks (21-1, 12-1) got double-doubles from the inside-outside duo of Fred Hooks and Austin Nichols to snap UAA's 5-game home winning streak.

Bullock, a 6-6 forward from Anchorage, put up his 11th double-double of the year with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Glover scored 15 of his career-high 19 points in the first half. Bullock shot 8 for 13 from the field, while Glover was 5 of 8. Glover has now reached double-digit scoring in three consecutive games.

After a back-and-forth first half, the Seawolves took a 44-42 lead into the break and padded their advantage to 62-51 with 14:22 remaining. But the Lumberjacks turned up their defense and made a charge, shaving seven points off the lead in the next three minutes.

The Seawolves seemed to reassert themselves when freshman guard Mark Drake (15 points, 6-11 FG) scored consecutive baskets to make it 72-63 with 10 minutes left.

Another HSU run sliced the lead down to 75-73 and the visitors from California tied it when UAA coach Charlie Bruns was whistled for his second technical, leading to a pair of free throws for Nichols (26 points, 10 rebounds, 9-9 FT). After the teams traded baskets, Nichols was fouled on a three-point attempt, simultaneously earning himself three points and knocking UAA point guard Bryson Vaughan from the game with his fifth personal.

A dunk and a layup by Hooks (17 points, 16 rebounds) put the Lumberjacks up 84-80 and the Seawolves could never tie or regain the lead. A long two-point shot by Drake with 0.1 seconds left accounted for the final margin.

Senior guard Ty Shippen scored 10 points and dished a team-high six assists for the Seawolves, while sophomore forward Josh Evans contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.

UAA gets a chance to snap its three-game losing streak Saturday when it hosts Western Oregon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at the Sports Center. Tip-off is 7:05 p.m.
