ANCHORAGE (Sept. 20) - Carolyn DeKay had a match-high 17 kills as the UAA volleyball team captured its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win Friday night, defeating Western Oregon 30-17, 30-27, 30-32, 30-24.
UAA (5-6, 1-2 GNAC) used a season-high 14 service aces to outlast WOU (1-10, 1-2), which managed only three aces.
Junior middle blocker Starr Burgan put up impressive numbers for the Seawolves with career-highs in aces (6) and digs (16). Her 11 kills were two short of matching a career-high, and her double-double was her team-best third of the season.
The Seawolves opened the match strong, outhitting the Wolves .280 to .000 in the first game and cruising to the 1-0 lead behind four kills from Brianne McCabe. But in the second game, UAA had to mount a late rally, getting seven kills from DeKay and five kills on .417 hitting from sophomore Jenny Mitchell.
Rallying from a 28-25 deficit in Game 3, the Seawolves served for the match at 29-28, but Western Oregon pulled out four of the final five points to extend things.
But the Seawolves kept their composure in the fourth game, using five kills on .625 hitting from DeKay to clinch the win.
Gwen Kreitzberg led WOU with 12 kills, while Janelle Barton had 11 kills and a match-high seven blocks.
UAA, 5-0 at the Sports Center, looks to keep its home mark perfect Saturday against Humboldt State (3-8, 1-3 GNAC). First serve is at 7:05 p.m.
