MONMOUTH, Ore. (Jan. 16) - Tanya Nizich had 17 points, but it wasn't enough to save the UAA women's basketball team on a cold-shooting night as the Seawolves lost 59-50 to host Western Oregon here Thursday.
UAA (7-4, 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) had its four-game winning streak snapped as WOU (7-7, 2-3) outshot the Seawolves 53 percent to 30 percent. Nizich, a junior guard from Juneau, went 6-for-14 from the field, but the rest of the Seawolves made just 11 of 43.
UAA, which got a team season-high 16 rebounds from Kamie Jo Massey, trailed by as many as 21 points before battling back to within 51-48 at the 2:58 mark. Two Mindy Mendenhall free throws made it 53-50 with 1:44 to go, but the Wolves hit a layup and made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
The Seawolves look to get back on track when they visit Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif., for a Saturday GNAC tilt. That game tips at 6 p.m. AST and can be heard over the internet at hsujacks.com.
