Seawolves overwhelm Aggies

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 3) - Kamie Jo Massey and Mindy Mendenhall each recorded double-doubles and the Seawolves used a huge rebounding advantage to knock off Oklahoma Panhandle State 77-53 in women's basketball action at the Sports Center tonight.


UAA (5-3) had team season-highs in rebounds (57), assists (25) and steals (21) in winning its second straight. OPSU (1-7) was led by center Joy Herzog's 25 points.


Massey nearly had a triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and six steals, while Mendenhall had 18 points (8-15 FG), 10 rebounds and five steals. It marked the second time this season that Massey and Mendenhall had double-doubles in the same game.


Mary Aschoff grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds and Amber Nasby reached double-figures with 10 points, while point guard Jessica Reilly came off the bench with a career-best eight assists.


UAA led 40-23 at halftime before the Aggies, of Goodwell, Okla., came out with more intensity in the second half and cut the lead to 44-38 with 12:53 to play. But the Seawolves responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to secure the win.


The Seawolves took advantage of 27 OPSU turnovers to register an 82-55 advantage in field-goal attempts, while outrebounding the visitors 57-36. The 77 points also equaled UAA's best offensive output of the season.


The same two teams meet again Saturday (7:05 p.m.) at the Sports Center. Friday's game was the first ever between the schools.
