Seawolves outshoot Wildcats 81-74

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 9) - The inside tandem of Peter Bullock and Bob Austin combined for 37 points and the Seawolves had their best shooting night of the season to post an 81-74 victory over Central Washington tonight at the Sports Center.

UAA (5-7, 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) shot 54.5 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 35-21. CWU (7-5, 1-2) was led by Terry Thompson's 19 points, but the Wildcats' sharpshooter was shut out in the second half.

Bullock scored 22 points to help UAA to a 10-point lead midway through the second half, and Austin who provided the offensive spark that lifted the Seawolves to the win. After the Wildcats cut UAA's lead to 66-65 with less than eight minutes remaining, Austin scored on a pair of pick-and-rolls, drawing a foul and completing the three-point play on the second occasion. The junior center's 15 points were a career high as he shot 7-for-9 from the field. He also had three blocks.

The Seawolves went 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the final six minutes, including a pair by Jesse Brown that put UAA up 79-74 with 12 seconds left. Brown scored a career-high 10 and matched his best-ever assist output with seven, but it was his defense on Thompson that kept the Seawolves in front throughout the entire second half.

Point guard Bryson Vaughan had 10 points and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He has now hit 21 of his 22 charities on the season. Fellow point guard Cody Gallatin was the fifth Seawolf in double figures with 11 points.

Austin and Bullock had six rebounds apiece, while forward Chris Bond led the Wildcats with just five boards. Bond had 13 points and Scotty Freymond scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half to keep CWU close.

The Seawolves resume GNAC play Saturday when they host Saint Martin's (0-13, 0-3) at the Sports Center. That game tips at 8 p.m., following the UAA-Alaska Fairbanks women's game.
