Seawolves score rare sweep

ANCHORAGE (Oct. 24) - Mindy Cason, O'Lita McWilliams and Starr Burgan combined for 39 kills to lead the UAA volleyball team to its first sweep of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match this season, 30-28, 30-28, 30-23 over Western Oregon.

UAA (12-7, 6-5 GNAC) also got 13 digs from Michelle Garvin to improve to 9-1 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex this season. WOU (9-11, 4-8) was led by Samantha Krier's 13 kills and nine digs.

Although Cason (14), McWilliams (13) and Burgan (12) racked up the double-digit kills numbers, it was middle blocker Katina Ozrelic who was UAA's most consistent attacker with nine kills and just one error in 21 attempts (.381).

The Seawolves struggled to right themselves through the first two games, blowing a 25-18 lead in Game 1 to trail 26-25 before pulling it out. UAA trailed for the majority of Game 2 until rallying from a 27-24 deficit to win six of the final seven points.

The third game went UAA's way from the start as the home team jumped to leads of 10-3 and 22-11 before cruising to the finish line. Ozrelic had five of her kills in that frame.

McWilliams also had 12 digs to post her 15th kills-digs double-double in 19 matches, while libero Kirsten Hunley got 11 digs.

The Seawolves try to run their winning streak to three when they host Humboldt State at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
