ANCHORAGE (Oct. 25) - O'Lita McWilliams led a late Seawolf charge with six of her team-high 16 kills in the fourth game as the UAA volleyball team survived, 32-34, 30-24, 30-26, 31-29, against Humboldt State at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday.
The Seawolves (13-7, 7-5 GNAC) also got great all-around efforts from seniors Michelle Garvin and Starr Burgan to avoid a second upset loss to the Lumberjacks (4-18, 2-11). Julia Shaw had 17 kills and Rachael Halverson added 16 in the losing effort.
UAA won its third straight by rallying from a 29-25 deficit in Game 4 to avoid going the distance. McWilliams keyed the rally with three kills sandwiched around a Garvin ace to bring it even at 29-29. Katina Ozrelic (11 kills, 3 blocks) then put the Seawolves ahead, and the match ended when Halverson was ruled in the net on her follow-through.
McWilliams led UAA with 20 digs, while setter Kasey Kuelper had 19 digs, seven kills and 46 assists. Garvin registered her sixth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 17 digs, and she came one short of her career-best with eight assists.
Starr Burgan was the only hitter not to register double-digit kills, but the senior middle blocker did a little bit of everything with eight kills, eight digs, six blocks and five aces.
Sophomore outside hitter Mindy Cason hit solidly with 15 kills.
The Seawolves dropped the first game after leading 27-23, and they pulled out the third despite blowing a 20-11 lead at one point. The home team trailed from the start in the fourth and faced a 17-11 hole before clawing back to 23-23. Humboldt State answered with six of the next eight points, setting up the dramatic finish.
UAA improved to 10-1 at home this season, but must go on the road for four of its final six matches, beginning Thursday, Oct. 30 at Seattle University.
