NNU nips UAA spikers

NAMPA, Idaho (Nov. 1) - The UAA volleyball team's four-match winning streak came to a heartbreaking end Saturday as Northwest Nazarene knocked off the Seawolves 30-21, 27-30, 22-30, 30-27, 15-13 at Hills Court tonight.

The Seawolves (14-8, 8-6 GNAC) got a triple-double from setter Kasey Kuelper, who finished with 10 kills, 14 digs and 56 assists, while Mindy Cason slammed a match-best 22 kills. NNU (10-14, 7-8) was led by 19 kills from Lindsay Miller and 13 kills and 11 digs from Ka'ala Hanson.

Kuelper's triple-double was the first for a Seawolf since Janelle Veith did it against Saint Martin's Oct. 5, 2001. The senior setter's 10 kills were a career high as well.

O'Lita McWilliams (18) and Starr Burgan (13) were the other Seawolves with double-digit kills, while junior middle blocker Jill Weinman came off the bench to hit a career .700 (7 kills, 0 errors, 10 attempts).

The match was UAA's 11th five-gamer of the season, two short of the school record, set in 1994. However, it was just the Seawolves' fourth loss this season when going the distance.

UAA finishes the home portion of their schedule next week with matches against Central Washington (Fri., Nov. 7) and Saint Martin's (Sat., Nov. 8) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Both matches begin at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday will feature a prematch ceremony to honor the team's five seniors.
