ANCHORAGE (Nov. 18) - Tanya Nizich came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points, sparking the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 65-49 victory over Christian Heritage at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Tuesday.
UAA (2-0) also got 12 points and nine rebounds from forward Mindy Mendenhall and 13 points and eight rebounds from forward Amber Nasby. Christian Heritage (0-4) was led by 15 points and 10 rebounds from center Elisabeth Reynolds.
The Seawolves jumped to a 36-27 halftime lead with 50 percent shooting and built their advantage as high as 52-35 on a Mendenhall jumper with 8:44 remaining. CHC, an NAIA team from El Cajon, Calif., then went on a 9-0 run over the next two and half minutes to cut it to eight points. But back-to-back three-pointers by Nizich and Kamie Jo Massey repelled the Hawks' charge.
Nizich went 6 for 13 on three-pointers, becoming just the sixth Seawolf to hit at least six in a game, one short of the school record (Allegra Stoetzel & Greta Fadness). The senior from Juneau played 21 minutes one night after missing the season-opener with the flu. Her 22 points were one shy of her career high as well.
Senior Sarah Larrabee dished a career-high eight assists to go with two steals and her first-ever blocked shot. The 5-4 point guard committed just one turnover in 34 minutes.
UAA is off until Tuesday, Nov. 25, when it opens the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout against Division I Mount St. Mary's at Sullivan Arena. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
