ANCHORAGE (Nov. 7) - Mindy Cason and Katina Ozrelic combined for 40 kills, but their effort was wasted as Central Washington came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the UAA volleyball team 25-30, 22-30, 30-25, 30-17, 17-15 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex tonight.
The Seawolves (14-9, 8-7 GNAC) also got 12 kills from Michelle Garvin as they dropped their second straight 5-game heartbreaker. Crystal Ames led the Wildcats (10-13, 9-6) with 20 kills and LeAnne McGahuey and Gita Burke notched 17 each, giving CWU sole possession of fourth place in the conference.
UAA setter Kasey Kuelper had 63 assists, passing the 60 mark for the seventh time this season, while libero Kirsten Hunley had a season-high 21 digs.
The match was UAA's 12th 5-gamer of the season, one short of tying the school record (1994).
O'Lita McWilliams did tie the school record for season service aces (57) with three Friday, but it came on an off-night offensively for the senior as she finished with just seven kills on -.075 hitting.
Neither team led by more than two points throughout the fifth game, and UAA had the first shot at match point at 14-13. But CWU scored two straight on a Garvin attack error and an Ames kill. Ozrelic's final kill of the night briefly kept the Seawolves alive before Burke slammed home the last two points.
The Seawolves close out their home season Saturday night when they face Saint Martin's at 7:05 p.m. at the Sports Complex. There will be a short prematch ceremony honoring UAA's five seniors - Starr Burgan, Garvin, Hunley, Kuelper and McWilliams.
