ANCHORAGE (Nov. 8) - Sophomore Mindy Cason blasted 18 kills Saturday night to help the Seawolf volleyball team send its five seniors off in style with a 30-25, 30-19, 30-27 victory over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Seniors O'Lita McWilliams and Michelle Garvin had 12 kills apiece for UAA (15-9, 9-7 GNAC) in their last home match as the Seawolves finished with an 11-2 home record. Emily Wofford led Saint Martin's (6-21, 1-15) with 12 kills and six blocks.
All five of UAA's seniors made major contributions to the victory - libero Kirsten Hunley got a match-best 16 digs; middle blocker Starr Burgan had seven kills and seven block assists; setter Kasey Kuelper had seven kills, seven digs and 47 assists; and McWilliams dug 15 balls.
McWilliams had only one ace, but it was enough to give her sole possession of the UAA single-season record with her 58th. Burgan passed a milestone mark as well, moving into UAA's career top 10 in total blocks with 221.
While the seniors were impressive, it was sophomore Cason who had the best showing, hitting a career-best .571 (18 kills, 2 errors, 28 attempts) and equaling her career-high with six blocks.
The Seawolves' .371 team hitting percentage was their second-best this year.
UAA's season comes to an end Nov. 14 and 15 with road matches at 4th-ranked Western Washington and Seattle Pacific.
