ANCHORAGE (Dec. 4) - Amber Nasby and Mindy Mendenhall scored 14 points apiece, but the precise second-half shooting of Humboldt State led the Lumberjacks to a 54-53 win over the UAA women's basketball team Thursday night.
UAA dropped to 4-1 and lost its Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener despite outrebounding HSU and leading 28-22 at halftime. The Lumberjacks (3-1, 1-0) were led by 16 points from center Nicole Lynch and 13 from guard Peni Vaefaga.
The Lumberjacks hit 6 of 12 three-pointers in the second half after going 0 for 4 from long range in the first. HSU's final three-pointer, by Kelly Fay, came with 1:56 left and gave the Lumberjacks their first and only lead of the game.
After each team failed to score on several possession, UAA freshman Whitney Leman grabbed Mendenhall's miss and was fouled with nine-tenths of a second remaining. Leman missed both shots and HSU secured the rebound and the game.
It was the Lumberjacks' first win in six all-time trips to Anchorage.
The Seawolves will try to rebound when they host Western Oregon at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
