ANCHORAGE (Feb. 13) - Kamie Jo Massey had 18 points and 16 rebounds to power the UAA women's basketball team to a 69-57 win over Humboldt State at the Sports Center Thursday night.
Center Mary Aschoff added 10 points for UAA (9-10, 4-7 GNAC), which snapped a five-game losing streak. Sophomore center Nicole Lynch kept HSU (8-13, 3-9) in the game with 27 points and 11 rebounds, but the Seawolves pulled away late for the final margin.
The Seawolves led 35-30 at halftime, but the Lumberjacks scored the first six points of the second half. UAA answered with a 9-0 run, however, as sophomore forward Amber Nasby scored four of her 10 points over the next five minutes.
HSU cut its deficit to 53-50 on a Lynch layup with 5:20 to play, but Massey then took over. The junior guard scored seven straight points, capped by a driving layup and foul at the 3:16 mark, putting the game out of reach. Massey, who also had four assists, tied her career-high rebounding mark and posted her third consecutive double-double and 11th of the season.
Mindy Mendenhall was the fourth Seawolf in double figures with 10 points, while Nasby dished a career-high five assists to go with a pair of steals.
UAA outrebounded the Lumberjacks 47-37, including 20 on the offensive end. The Seawolf bench was a big factor as well, outscoring HSU's reserves 28-7.
The Seawolves will try to climb back to the .500 mark Saturday when they host Western Oregon for a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at 6 p.m. AST.
