Women suffer OT setback

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 15) - Kamie Jo Massey led three Seawolves in double figures with 18 points, but it wasn't quite enough as the UAA women's basketball team fell 68-64 in overtime to Western Oregon at the Sports Center tonight.

Massey also had nine rebounds, six assists and four steals for UAA (9-11, 4-8 GNAC), while Western Oregon's Talia Sanderson was the hero with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The game was a back-and-forth affair with 12 ties and eight leads changes. However, WOU (12-10, 7-6) controlled the extra session, taking the lead for good on Nicole Calderon's jumper with 3:32 left, making it 61-59. Calderon finished with a game-high 19 points.

UAA cut the deficit to one on three occasions in the extra session, the final time on Sarah Larrabee's free throws with 30 seconds left. Erica Matthews made a pair of charities for the Wolves, leaving UAA with one last chance, trailing 67-64. Tanya Nizich's three-point attempt went off glass and around the rim before falling off, and Matthews sealed the game with another free throw.

It was Nizich who forced the final tie of regulation at 57-57 when she scored a layup on a pass from Mindy Mendenhall (10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists) with 34 seconds left. Mendenhall then stole the ball on the defensive end, setting up UAA's final possession with six seconds to go. Massey drove the lane, but her bank shot drew iron.

Mary Aschoff was the third Seawolf in double-figures with 12 points, in a game where neither team led by more than six points.

UAA outrebounded the Wolves 38-32, but WOU shot 24 of 47 and 5 of 11 from three-point range, while UAA went 25 of 69 and 3 of 17 on threes.

The Seawolves shoot for their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference road win when they visit Saint Martin's on Thursday in Lacey, Wash. Tip-off is 4 p.m. AST.
