LACEY, Wash. (Feb. 20) - Mary Aschoff and Kamie Jo Massey combined for 39 points and 30 rebounds, and Tanya Nizich found her three-point stroke in overtime as the UAA women's basketball team scored a 78-75 victory over host Saint Martin's here Thursday.
The Seawolves (10-11, 5-8 GNAC) shot a season-best 52.4 percent from the field, while holding the Saints (11-12, 7-7) to just 36.8 percent shooting, and outrebounded their hosts 50-38.
Aschoff had UAA season-highs of 25 points and 17 rebounds in 38 minutes, while Massey had 14 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double. Playing all but two minutes, Massey also had six assists, two steals and partially blocked a Saint Martin's last-second three-point attempt.
The Saints tied the game 65-65 with 13 seconds left in regulation, and UAA's Tanya Nizich missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the Seawolves to their second straight overtime.
With 2:24 left in the extra period, UAA's Mindy Mendenhall (17 points, 8-14 FG) hit a jumper to forge the game's seventh and final tie at 70-70. Nizich (15 points, 3-4 3FG) then nailed a three-pointer at the 1:48 mark to put UAA up for good.
SMC's Julia Eisentrout answered with a jumper to cut the lead to one, but Nizich came down and nailed another three to put UAA up 76-72 with 1:15 to go.
After a Saints basket, Mendenhall hit yet another jump shot to make it 78-74 with 30 seconds left. Eisentrout then hit one of two free throws, and the Seawolves committed a turnover to give the home team one last chance.
But Massey blocked Eisentrout's three-point try with the clock running down, and Alana Erickson (17 points) missed another three at the buzzer.
The win avenged a 77-55 setback to the Saints in January at the Sports Center.
"Mary had the game of her life," said UAA head coach Brandi Dunigan of her junior center, who shot 11 of 16 from the field and 3 of 5 from the free throw line. It was Aschoff's third double-double of the season.
Nizich finished with 15 points and six assists, while freshman forward Kelsey Larsen dished five assists. UAA's 24 team assists were one short of its season-high.
Martina Kartikova led the Saints with 18 points.
