Viking surge sinks Seawolves

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 10) - The UAA women's basketball team led the nation's 21st-ranked team at halftime, but the Seawolves went cold in the second 20 minutes and fell to Western Washington 73-56 at the Sports Center on Monday.

Junior Kamie Jo Massey led UAA (8-10, 3-7 GNAC) with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, but the Seawolves connected on only 25 percent of their second half shots, while the Vikings (16-3, 9-1) shot 58.6 percent in the second half.

Jenn McGillivray came off the bench to give WWU a lift, scoring 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting, along with six rebounds. Susan Rodgers, the Vikings' 6-6 center, had 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocks despite foul trouble.

UAA, which dropped its fifth straight game, got a lift off the bench from sophomore forward Amber Nasby, who set a career-high with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while junior center Mary Aschoff scored seven of her 11 points at the free throw line.

UAA hit four three-pointers in the first half, and Massey's free throws with 20 seconds remaining gave the Seawolves a 29-28 lead at intermission. Aschoff scored off a Massey dish at 16:50 of the second half to give UAA a 34-32 lead, but the Vikings answered with an 8-0 run from which the Seawolves never recovered.

An Aschoff free throw with 7:53 left made it 50-44, but that was as close as the Seawolves would get.

UAA looks to turn around its luck Thursday, when it hosts Humboldt State in a 6 p.m. tip-off at the Sports Center.
