Spikers fall in 5

FAIRBANKS (Sept. 20) - O'Lita McWilliams' 21 kills and eight aces were not enough Saturday as the UAA volleyball team lost 19-30, 30-27, 30-28, 28-30, 15-12 to Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.


The Seawolves (7-4, 1-2 GNAC) got a 15 kills from Mindy Cason and 13 from Starr Burgan, but couldn't take advantage of a season-high 19 aces.


UAF (5-3, 2-1) held huge advantages in blocking (13-3) and digs (88-67) and got outstanding individual performances from Mallory Bergstrom (23 kills, 23 digs), Carlin Smith (15 kills, .609 attack pct.) and Candice Smith (12 kills, 21 digs).


UAA's Michelle Garvin had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.


The Seawolves are back on the road Thursday at Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif., and Saturday at Western Oregon in Monmouth. Both matches begin at 6 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time.
