ANCHORAGE (Jan. 15) - Amber Nasby scored a career-high 23 points and Kamie Jo Massey pulled down 17 rebounds to help the UAA women's basketball team snap its 6-game losing streak, 72-63 over Central Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex tonight.
The Seawolves (6-8, 1-4 GNAC) also got 21 points from Mindy Mendenhall and 18 from Tanya Nizich as they shot a season-high 50 percent from the field. CWU (7-6, 1-3) was led by 19 points and 10 rebounds from forward Lindsay Weiss.
UAA went to the locker room with a 32-31 advantage after a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes. The Seawolves stretched their lead to 49-31 by holding the Wildcats scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes of the second half.
CWU got within 58-50 with 6:04 to play and cut the lead to 68-63 with 24 seconds left before Massey and Nizich closed the game with four consecutive free throws.
Nasby, a junior from Kelowna, B.C., found her jump shot Thursday, finishing 11 of 19 from the field to go with four rebounds and a pair of steals. Many of Nasby's shots were set up by the dribble penetration of freshman Whitney Leman, who came off the bench to dish a personal-best eight assists.
Mendenhall was the recipient of several good passes as well as the senior tallied a season-high 21 points (8-15 FG) to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Massey equaled her career-high in rebounds, chipping in nine points, five assists and a pair of blocks as well.
The win also snapped a losing streak against the Wildcats, who had won six straight in the series.
The Seawolves hit the court again Saturday night when they host undefeated and 7th-ranked Seattle Pacific at 7:05 p.m.
