BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Jan. 24) - Kamie Jo Massey and Tanya Nizich both delivered career-high scoring nights to power the UAA women's basketball team to a 78-70 upset of Western Washington on Saturday afternoon.
UAA (7-10, 2-6 GNAC) shot a season-best 8-for-12 from three-point range as it recorded its first road win of the season and its first victory in six tries at Carver Gymnasium. The Vikings (12-4, 5-2), who were led by 20 points from reserve Jodi Gerald, had won 13 straight at home and entered the game ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II West Region poll.
The score was tied 43-43 with 12 minutes left, but UAA went on a 17-5 run to take a 60-48 advantage with 6:42 to go. Nizich had eight her 24 points in the run, and forward Amber Nasby, who finished the game with 12 points, added six in the charge.
The Vikings rallied with six straight points to close the gap to six, 60-54, with four minutes left and eventually pulled to within five, 65-60, on a 3-pointer by Gerald with 2:16 to go, but could get no closer.
Massey finished with her second straight double-double (27 points-11 rebounds), hitting 8 of 16 from the field, 9 of 10 free throws and dishing five assists. The senior played the entire game for the 11th time this season.
Nizich also went the entire 40 minutes, nailing 8 of 12 overall and 6 of 9 three-pointers. She dished four assists, as did Nasby and point guard Jessica Reilly.
